Energy passes from producers upward, and most of it is lost at every step.
A worked example
Grass → grasshopper → mouse → hawk is four levels. Only a small part of each level's energy reaches the next.
The mistake people actually make
Energy is not destroyed going up the pyramid. It is used for life processes and lost as heat.
