Weather, climate and farming

Weather is what the sky does today; climate is the pattern of weather in one place over many years.

A worked example

A farmer choosing a crop uses climate, such as the usual length of the growing season and the rain a season normally brings, not tomorrow's forecast.

The mistake people actually make

One hot day is weather, not a change in climate. Alberta's cold winters come from Earth's tilt changing how directly sunlight strikes, not from Earth being further from the Sun.
