Negative numbers
Subtracting a negative adds; multiplying two negatives gives a positive.
A worked example
Work out -3 - (-7). Subtracting -7 is the same as adding 7, so -3 + 7 = 4.
The mistake people actually make
Two minus signs next to each other become a plus. One negative in a multiplication keeps the answer negative.
