Scientific notation
A number between 1 and 10, times a power of ten.
A worked example
Write 45 000 in scientific notation. Move the decimal 4 places left to get 4.5, so it is 4.5 x 10^4.
The mistake people actually make
Moving the decimal left gives a positive exponent; moving right gives a negative one.
