Sets and Venn diagrams
Adding two groups counts the overlap twice, so subtract it once.
A worked example
54 play a sport, 38 an instrument, 15 do both. At least one: 54 + 38 − 15 = 77.

For three sets, subtract each pair and then add the triple overlap back on.
