WHMIS labels
A WHMIS label carries six required elements -- product identifier, supplier identifier, pictogram, signal word, hazard statement and precautionary statement -- each with its own distinct job.
A worked example
A drum's label shows a pictogram, the word DANGER, and a short hazard statement such as "causes severe skin burns." A separate precautionary statement underneath it tells the worker what to do about it: "wear protective gloves and eye protection."
The mistake people actually make
A hazard statement names the danger; a precautionary statement is the separate instruction for handling it. The product identifier names the substance; the supplier identifier names the company. Say WHMIS, never WHMIS 2015.
